Christenberg

Yesterday we had a Fulbright excursion to Christenberg, which used to be a fortress of some sort. After a perilous bus trip up a mountain we were greeted by a barbeque.

Bratwurst und "speckstick." The speck was sort of like bacon, wrapped around a stick and grilled. Very good and very fatty. This was basically my only meal for the day. (Don't worry, mom, I also ate some vegetables.)

While eating, we enjoyed this view. My camera did not do it justice.
After lunch we were taken on a tour of the surroundings by a man who claimed his english was not very good (German observation #1: A lot of people claim their English isn't very good. Actually, it's better than the average American's)


This is one of the old walls. Apparently they used to be steeper and more wall-like.

This church was built around 1000. It isn't ornately decorated (or really decorated at all)--the man that gave the tour told us it has always been a poor church--but it's amazing to think people have used the building for a thousand years. The people in the village below still use it for special services, like funerals.
